Lakers beat Hillsdale in nine innings
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State women's softball defeated Hillsdale College 12-11 in a thrilling nine-inning game. The Lakers went on to drop game two of Saturday's double-header, 13-0, while playing in frigid conditions at Kaunisto Field.
Nicole Carstensen led the team with four hits and three RBI's in five at-bats during the opener. Amber Kern and Christine Larkin were both 2-for-4 at the plate. Lorrie Chaperon started the Laker scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning.
LSSU scored four runs in the sixth inning to come back from an 11-7 deficit. At the bottom of the ninth inning, Ronlea Peterson landed herself on second base after hitting a double, advanced to third on a SAC bunt by Lacey Knoop, and scored the winning run after Carstensen hit a single. Peterson is a junior on the basketball team who was added to the roster this week. She is a former all-state shortstop from Midland High School.
Larkin was the winning pitcher in the first game, allowing only four hits and no runs.
In game two of the double-header, LSSU's Nichole Dunford went 2-for-2 at the plate.
The Lakers are now 1-11 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 6-28 overall. They play host to Ferris State at noon Sunday.
Hillsdale is 8-22 overall and 3-15 in the GLIAC.
