Lakers 0-2 during Day 1 of Urbana Tournament
URBANA, Ohio - Lake Superior State lost 6-5 in eight innings to host Urbana and fell 7-2 in a non-conference game against rival Grand Valley State during the first day of the two-day Urbana Softball Tournament.
Urbana (5-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come back from a 5-3 deficit. Nichole Dunford and Brittany Cousino were both 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Lake Superior State (4-16), which led 5-2 through three innings. Lacey Knoop had a double, and Lorrie Chaperon, Amber Kern, Christine Larkin and Samantha Periard had singles.
LSSU starting pitcher Nikki Stein allowed two earned runs on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts through 4.1 innings. Reliever Jillian Willette gave up three earned runs on nine hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Willette claimed the loss.
Details of LSSU's loss to GVSU were not available. The Lakers play both teams again Sunday.
