Lakers go 2-1 Sunday at KVCC
KALAMAZOO - The Lake Superior State softball team opened the fall season with two wins and a loss during Sunday's triple header at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
LSSU totaled 14 hits during a come-from behind 7-6 win. Nicole Carstensen singled and scored the game-winning run in the fourth on back-to-back hits by Nichole Dunford and Amber Kern. Dunford's RBI single scored Lacey Knoop, who tied it, 6-6. Carstensen, Knoop and Lorrie Chaperone totaled three hits each.
Jordan Christie pitched three of the five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Jillian Willette allowed two hits and had one strikeout during the final two scoreless innings.
The Lakers scored six runs in the first inning of a 7-1 victory. Christine Larkin led the attack with a double and two singles, and Knoop and Carstensen added two hits each. Larkin was also the starter on the mound and gave up one run on two hits and three strikeouts. Willette pitched the final two no-hit innings.
Carstensen and Willette had Lake Superior State's only hits in a 2-0 loss. Nicole Stein gave up two runs in the third inning. She had two strikeouts and allowed two hits. Willette had one strikeout.
All three games went five innings.
LSSU plays at Midland on Saturday.
