Lakers come up a run short during nightcap against FSU
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State closed out its three-day, six-game homestand with 9-0 and 6-5 losses to Ferris State Monday at Kaunisto Field.
Nicole Carstensen, Nichole Dunford and Brittany Cousino strung together three straight hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to end FSU freshman pitcher Dana Bowler's no-hitter. Ferris State (20-13 overall, 11-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) out-hit LSSU, 13-3.
Laker pitcher Jillian Willette (4-10) totaled one walk and two strikeouts and gave up six earned runs. Bowler (6-7) struck out 11 and walked one.
During the nightcap, LSSU (8-30 overall, 3-13 GLIAC) scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning and stranded the tying and winning runs. Both teams totaled nine hits.
Ronlea Peterson and Lacey Knoop were both 2-for-4, while Carstensen, Dunford, Christine Larkin, Amber Kern and Willette had one hit each. Dunford and Peterson both doubled.
Larkin (2-11) totaled two walks and no strikeouts in taking the loss. FSU pitcher Kayle Stevenson (9-6) totaled three walks and four strikeouts.
The Lakers play April 24 at Ashland.
