Lakers open spring trip with two close games against Tampa
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Lake Superior State softball team began it's 18-game spring break trip with two close games against Tampa on Friday.
Tampa (4-4) out-hit LSSU 5-2 to win the opener 2-0. Lacey Knoop and Jillian Willette both doubled for the Lakers. Willette, a sophomore pitcher, went the distance in the loss, totaling four walks and three strikeouts. She gave up a solo home run in the sixth.
Tampa scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to win the nightcap, 1-0. Freshman Nikki Stein gave up one run on three hits, one walk and one strikeout while going the distance in her first collegiate start. She overcame a line drive to the face late in the contest.
Nichole Dunford and Knoop doubled, and Samantha Periard singled for LSSU (0-2), which stranded five runners.
The Lakers have Saturday off, then play four games Sunday in Clearwater.
