Lakers' comeback falls short against Timberwolves
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State fell two runs short after battling back from a 10-1 deficit during the first game of Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball double-header against Northwood. The Timberwolves held on to win Game 1, 11-9. Game 2 was postponed due to sleet.
LSSU (5-24 overall, 2-20 GLIAC) scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, added a single run in the fifth and picked up two more runs on senior Ronlea Peterson's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Nicole Carstensen was stranded on third base during the bottom of the seventh.
Peterson was 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBIs. Christine Larkin was 3-for-3, while Heather Cuthrell was 2-for-3. Cuthrell, Brittany Cousino and Lindsay Clemens also doubled for the Lakers.
Shortstop Stacey Klonowski was 4-for-5 to lead Northwood (22-16-1 overall, 16-10-1 GLIAC). The Timberwolves out-hit LSSU, 16-12.
Sophomore Nikki Stein gave up eight runs on eight hits while facing 17 batters through two innings. Larkin gave up three runs on seven hits during 3 2/3 innings of work, and Jillian Willette allowed one hit during the final 1 1/3 innings.
Megan Eddy (16-5) gave up four runs on seven hits and earned the win. She pitched all but 2/3 innings of the fourth.
LSSU and NU are scheduled to play a double-header Friday at 1 p.m. at Locey Field. The Lakers and Timberwolves also hope to play Game 2 of today's twinbill Friday.
