CANTON, Ohio - Lake Superior State went into its final weekend of softball knowing it fell short of making the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament field, but was determined to end the 2014 season on a high note. The Lakers did just that, closing with 6-5 and 9-1 wins Sunday at Malone.
LSSU (8-24 overall, 7-19 GLIAC) trailed throughout most of the first game until scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Heather Cuthrell squeezed in Carly Banchiu for the game-tying run and eventually scored the winning run on an error. Banchiu doubled to start the rally.
Malone (10-30-1 overall, 2-24 GLIAC) held a 9-7 hitting edge, but was shut out by relief pitcher Jade Stein during the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Brandi Anderson (5-9) recorded the win and Stein the save. Stein totaled three strikeouts and one walk, and gave up only one hit.
Dani Reveley was 2-for-4 in the opener, while Amanda Maxon, Banchiu, Haleigh Edgar, Cuthrell and Alyssa Avilla had one each for LSSU. Maxon was credited with the other RBI.
Felicia Gingrich limited Malone to four hits in the six-inning nightcap and was supported by an 11-hit Laker attack. Allison Traczyk led the LSSU offense by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Maxon's two hits were a double and a triple. Anderson also had a triple, and Cuthrell added a double. Banchiu, Kirsten Thompson and Cuthrell singled.
Gingrich totaled five strikeouts and one walk while notching her first victory of the season. LSSU scored during every inning except the second and didn't give up a run until the top of the sixth.
