Women's Tennis Drops Narrow 5-4 League Decision At Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Lake Superior State University women's tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 decision this Saturday (Sept. 16) to Ashland in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competition at AU's Deborah Liebert Karl Tennis Complex in Ashland, Ohio,

With the loss, Lake Superior State falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in GLIAC match play.  On the other side, Ashland upped its record to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference this fall.

The Lakers' first win of the day occurred in number two doubles as junior Allison Grandfield and freshman AlexiAnn Drouin combined for an 8-3 triumph.  Ashland would claim the other two victories in doubles action, which included juniors Jenay Andrews and senior Laura (Fernandez) Valderrama coming out on the short end of a 9-7 decision to AU's Anna Hart and Camille Ringot at the number three position.  The tandem of junior Tara Harvey and senior Macarena Bielsa lost an 8-5 decision at the top doubles flight.

In singles play, Lake Superior State won three of the six singles flights.  AlexiAnn Drouin prevailed at the top flight winning 6-1, 6-0 while Macarena Bielsa did likewise at the three position posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory.  Laura (Fernandez) Valderrama notched the other LSSU singles win by producing a 6-4, 7-5 performance.

Tara Harvey suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback in number two singles while Allison Grandfield fell 7-6, 3-6, 3-6 to her counterpart at number five singles.  The sixth singles flight resulted in Ashland's Allison Brooks posting a 6-0, 6-3 win over junior Kirsten Malpass.    

Lake Superior State concludes its three-match conference road swing this Sunday (Sept. 17) as the Lakers go up against the Tiffin (Ohio) Dragons.  A 10 a.m. (EDT) start time is slated for the league encounter between the two schools.
