Former Lakers Groos and LaMothe receive scholarships

SAULT STE. MARIE - Former Lake Superior State volleyball player Jamie Groos was awarded an Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post-Graduate Scholarship, while former LSSU tennis player Megan LaMothe received the NCAA Division II Completion Award.

Groos (Escanaba, Mich.), who graduated from LSSU last spring with computer science/computer networking degrees, will attend graduate school at Western Michigan University this fall. She was ranked second academically among LSSU's senior athletes with a 3.96 grade point average. She has also received a graduate assistantship at WMU.

After red-shirting in 2003 and playing in only 11 matches in 2004, Groos started as a middle hitter for LSSU in 2005. She ranked among the GLIAC leaders in total blocks as a sophomore and junior, and led the GLIAC in solo blocks in 2006. Prior to her senior season (Fall, 2007), she was asked to play all-around, which is a difficult transition for a middle hitter. The team's only senior went on to lead the Lakers in kills and service reception, was second on the team in digs and third in blocks. She earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention and her third straight GLIAC All-Academic Team Award.

LaMothe (Troy, Mich.), who was named the Deb McPherson Female Athlete of the Year in 2007-08, received an NCAA scholarship that provides assistance to student-athletes who have exhausted their athletic eligibility but must return to school to complete degree requirements.

"Needless to say, we are extremely proud of Jamie and Megan," said Kris Dunbar, LSSU Director of Athletics. "Both young women made the most of every opportunity they were given and represented LSSU in a positive way. We are thankful that the NCAA can help us show appreciation by providing financial assistance as they continue their studies. It will be nice to have Megan around for another year, and we wish Jamie the best at graduate school."

LaMothe,  an accounting major with a 3.176 grade point average, is a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team selection and two-time All-GLIAC First Team honoree. She set school records for career wins (54-24) and career win percentage (.692), shattering LSSU's previous win record of 38. LaMothe started her collegiate career at No. 4 singles and moved up one spot every year. She helped lead the Lakers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007, and was 12-6 at No. 1 singles in 2007-08.
