Lakers split matches during first outing of the season
CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 3-0 victory over host Minnesota-Crookston and a 3-0 loss to Minnesota State-Moorhead on Friday at the Golden Eagle Invitational.
Jeanna Radzinski and Ali Jones totaled 10 kills each to lead the Lakers past the host Golden Eagles (0-5). Radzinski had a .533 attack percentage during her LSSU debut. The Lakers, who won the match, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23, posted a .284 attack percentage as a team.
Brittany Newberry led LSSU in digs with 11, while Radzinski followed with nine. Ashley Purvis totaled 28 assists. Jones added a solo block and two block assists, and Janelle Balkwill added three block assists.
MSU-Moorhead (4-2) totaled 36 team kills and forced 32 LSSU attack errors in its 25-16, 25-20, 25-11 victory. Jones totaled nine kills to lead the Lakers, who were limited to 26 kills for the match.
Newberry and Brishia Stroven had a team-high six digs, and Purvis contributed 22 assists.
The Lakers (1-1) play Bemidji State and South Dakota on Saturday.
