Lakers come back, but fall in five sets at WSU


DETROIT - Lake Superior State hit a season high in kills despite a 3-2 loss at Wayne State during Saturday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match.

The Lakers (3-10 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) had three players reach double figures in kills as they finished with a season-high 55 kills. Junior Sara Hess had 15 kills, which was an individual season high for LSSU. Ali Jones followed with 12 kills, and Jessica Ewer had 11.

LSSU fell behind, 2-0, after losing the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-13. The Lakers came back with 25-23 and 25-20 victories, but wound up losing the tie-breaker set, 15-9. They had attack percentages of .250 and .222 during their two victorious sets.

Ashley Purvis totaled 36 assists, 11 digs, five kills and three block assists, while Brittany Newberry had a team-high 15 digs for the Lakers. Abby Shereda and Jeanna Radzninski combined to total 11 kills.

Wayne State (10-7 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) also totaled 55 team kills, but overpowered the Lakers with 18 team blocks. LSSU was limited to four team blocks. Sara Gosselin had 20 kills to lead WSU.

LSSU, which is the middle of a three-week road stretch, travels to Hillsdale on Oct. 10.
