Ewer leads Lakers' attack at Findlay Tournament
FINDLAY, Ohio - Versatile senior Jessica Ewer, a setter or libero during past seasons, was Lake Superior State's top attacker at the Findlay Tournament. Ewer, who is 5-foot-7, totaled a team-leading 33 kills with a .223 attack percentage for the Lakers, who finished 0-4 for the weekend. She also had eight service aces.
Lake Superior State (0-8) closed out the Findlay Tournament on Saturday with losses to Missouri-St. Louis, 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, and St. Joseph's, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18.
Ewer totaled seven kills and 11 digs against during the Lakers' 3-1 loss to UMSL (6-2). Sara Hess added six kills, two solo blocks and two block assists, while Janelle Balkwill had 16 assists. Libero Brittany Newberry led in digs with 23. As a team, LSSU totaled 30 kills, which is a season-high for a four-set match.
Ewer had eight kills, Hess seven and Abby Shereda and Nikki Stratelak six each against St. Joseph's. Balkwill totaled 29 assists, and Newberry had 29 digs, which were both LSSU season highs for a three-set match.. Shereda contributed three solo blocks.
Hess finished the weekend with 28 kills and a team-leading 11 blocks. Shereda added 24 kills, while Balkwill had 115 assists and nine blocks. Newberry totaled 103 digs.
LSSU plays its home opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, against Michigan Tech.
