Lakers win first set then drop the next three

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State was the dominant team at the net and edged Saginaw Valley State in the first set, but the Cardinals hung on to win the next three sets and take Tuesday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20.

LSSU senior Sara Hess tied a season high for the Lakers by totaling a match-leading 15 kills against SVSU. She also had three blocks and a .382 attack percentage. Abby Shereda added eight kills, and Jessica Ewer totaled six kills and three aces.

Brittany Newberry totaled 26 digs and had a perfect night in service reception on 22 attempts. Nikki Stratelak also had one of her best back-row performances of the season, totaling 17 receptions on 18 tries. Janelle Balkwill finished with 31 assists.

The Lakers (0-11 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) travel to Ashland on Friday.

Annie Buxton totaled 14 kills, and Kait Harris had 48 assists to lead SVSU (7-4 overall, 2-1 GLIAC).
