Lakers split opening matches at Wildcat Classic
MARQUETTE – Juniors Abby Shereda and Jeanna Radzinski, and freshman Emily Snyder provided the firepower at the net to lead the Lake Superior State volleyball team to a four-set victory over American International Friday during the second round of the Wildcat Classic hosted by Northern Michigan University.
The Lakers (1-1) rebounded from a first-game loss and defeated the Yellowjackets, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19. They lost their opening match to Winona State, 20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-8.
Shereda totaled 15 kills and had a .263 attack percentage against American International. Snyder totaled 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces, and Radzinski added eight kills and accounted for five of the Lakers’ nine blocks. Junior libero Brittany Newberry totaled 22 digs, and setter Janelle Balkwill had 32 assists.
Shereda led the Lakers with 11 kills, nine digs, one block solo and one block assist during the loss to Winona State. Snyder finished with seven kills, and sophomore Loran Stenzel had five. Balkwill totaled 16 assists, and Newberry had 21 digs.
The Lakers play Minnesota-Crookston at 8:30 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside at 5 p.m. Saturday at NMU.
