Lakers win first Crossover contest

AURORA, Ill. - Lake Superior State scrapped its way to a 25-27, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Friday during the opening round of the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament hosted by the Great Lakes Volleyball Center.

LSSU (5-12) improved to 2-1 in five-set matches this season. The Lakers play Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents Bellarmine and Illinois-Springfield on Saturday.

LSSU's 63 kills, .218 attack percentaghe, 58 assists and 88 digs were its second-highest team totals of the season in all four categories. Freshman Emily Snyder totaled 17 kills to lead the Lakers and equal the Lakers' individual season high for the year. Her 22 service points were a season high, as were libero Brittany Newberry's 40 digs.

Lindsay McLeod and Abby Shereda added 13 kills each for the Lakers, and setter Janelle Balkwill had 11 kills and 40 assists. McLeod had two solo blocks and one block assist.

Snyder, Shereda and Katie Fitzpatrick also reached double figures in digs.

Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 5-11.
