Lakers open home slate with a four-set victory

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State relied on a balanced attack and support from a big student crowd to open its home volleyball slate with a four-set victory over Tiffin Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers (2-3 overall, 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) defeated Tiffin, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22. TU dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC.

Junior Nikki Stratelak totaled 14 kills and a .282 attack percentage to lead the Lakers. Senior Brittany Newberry followed with 10 kills, while seniors Jeanna Radzinski and Janelle Balkwill had eight each. Balkwill, who also totaled 19 assists, had a .375 attack percentage.

Marylou Drobish matched Balkwill in assists. Newberry led the Lakers in digs with 18, followed by Stratelak with 12, Balkwill with 11 and Katie Fitzpatrick with 10. Radzinski and Billie McLeod contributed three block assists, while Newberry had two solos and one assist.

LSSU notched a team attack rate of at least .250 during sets two, three and four.

Danielle McQuade led Tiffin with 21 kills.

The Lakers play host to Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. Saturday.
