Lakers set winning tone early to beat Huskies
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State set the tone early by dominating the first two sets of Saturday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match against Michigan Tech, then came from behind during the fourth set to secure the victory.
The Lakers (3-8 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) snapped a five-match losing skid by beating the Huskies, 25-15, 25-10, 16-25, 25-23. LSSU rallied back from a 23-18 deficit during the final set. Laker sophomore Billie McLeod served the final six points and turned in impressive totals of four kills, three solo blocks and five block assists.
Brittany Newberry led the Lakers in kills with 13, and Jeanna Radzinski followed with eight. Janelle Balkwill totaled 20 assists and three service aces. Marylou Drobish added 14 assists. Jessica Murawski led LSSU in digs with 13, and Newberry followed with 11.
As a team, the Lakers compiled eight service aces, making up for 14 service errors.
Jena Karkos also totaled 13 kills to lead MTU (2-10 overall, 0-7 GLIAC).
The Lakers play Sept. 30 at Northwood.
