ODU wins to leave Lakers with homestand split
SAULT STE. MARIE - Ohio Dominican pulled out a hotly-contested fourth set to beat Lake Superior State Saturday, and both teams wound up with splits during the first weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
ODU (5-1 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) defeated LSSU, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24. The Lakers fell to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.
Brittany Newberry totaled eight kills and 16 digs, and Jeanna Radzinski followed with six digs for LSSU. Marylou Drobish totaled 18 assists, while Janelle Balkwill had 11. Katie Fitzpatrick led in digs with 19.
Lindsay McLeod finished with two solo blocks and seven block assists as the Lakers totaled 10 team blocks to ODU's eight. She had back-to-back blocks, enabling LSSU to come from behind and tie the fourth set, 18-18.
The Panthers, however, compiled eight service aces to LSSU's three for the match.
The Lakers play Sept. 16 at Grand Valley State.
