SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University Athletics is proud to announce that the cumulative weighted grade point average for all student-athletes for the Fall 2019 semester is 3.278.
The achievement highlights the continued improvement in the academic side of the student-athlete experience at Lake Superior State. During the 2018-19 academic year, the Lake State student-athletes garnered a 3.155 weighted GPA. The trend improves upon the 3.084 GPA in 2016-17 and 3.056 GPA in 2015-16.
Women's tennis led all sports during the fall semester with a 3.657 GPA, followed by the varsity women's basketball team with a 3.422 GPA and men's hockey with a 3.406 GPA. Volleyball's upward trend in average GPA continued as the team recorded a 3.392 GPA during the semester - increasing from year long total of 3.255 in 2018-19.
The men's and women's golf teams strong academic performances, as displayed in recent years continued as the men's team earned an average GPA of 3.367 while the women's team posted an average GPA of 3.39.
In total, 11 of the 12 varsity programs garnered fall semester grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.
"This is an outstanding accomplishment for our department and our university," said Dr. David Paitson, Lake Superior State's Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes put in a tremendous amount of work in the classroom and it is clearly reflected here. I am very proud of the efforts from our coaches to instill the importance of a strong academic foundation here at Lake Superior State. I look forward to the continued successes that our student-athletes will have during their time at LSSU as well as in their lives after college."
On an individual level, 15 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2019 semester while 66 student-athletes were named to the Lake Superior State Dean's List as they recorded a GPA of 3.5 or higher with a minimum of 12 credit hours earned.
