Multiple Lakers receive All-WCHA recognition

EDINA, Minn. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Thursday, the honorees of the 2016-17 All-WCHA Teams, All-WCHA Rookie Team and the WCHA All-Academic honorees. Two Lake Superior State student-athletes were honored with All-WCHA accolades and 12 Lakers earned All-Academic standing.

Sophomore forward and the team's leading scorer, Mitch Hults, was named to the All-WCHA Second Team as a forward selection and achieved WCHA All-Academic standing for his endeavors in the classroom. Hults played in all 36 games for the Lakers and accumulated 34 points to rank third overall in scoring among WCHA players. His 23 assists are the overall league-high and rank tied for 35th nationally.

In 28 league games this season, Hults tied for fourth among WCHA players with 24 points and tied for seventh with 15 assists. Hults also racked up 10 multi-point games while scoring two game-winning goals and assisting on three game-winning tallies.

This marks the first All-WCHA selection the Stoughton, Wis., native. Early in the season, Hults earned WCHA Player of the Month honors after racking up 11 points through the opening month of the season, including notching a point in all six games as the Lakers led the nation with a 5.0 goals per game average.

Freshman Max Humitz was also earned all-conference status with a selection on the All-WCHA Rookie Team. The native of Livonia, Mich., ranked second on the team with 13 goals and finished seventh among LSSU players with 20 points.

Among WCHA freshmen, Humitz ranked second in total goals with 13 and second with 10 goals in conference games. Humitz also tied for fifth among WCHA freshmen in conference scoring at 17 points in 28 games and overall scoring with 20 points.

Humitz was named WCHA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 18 this season and earned the title of WCHA Rookie of the Month for January after leading the WCHA in goals by a freshman (5) and total points by a freshman (9) and helping the Lakers claim a 3-2-3 overall record during the month. He also led the league in power-play goals with four and tied for second in overall goals and points in January.

The league also recognized the WCHA All-Academic Qualifiers for student-athletes that have achieved at least a 3.0  grade-point average for the previous two semesters and have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the 2016-17 season. Headlining the list of All-Academic qualifiers, goaltenders Gordon Defiel and Nick Kossoff, along with defensemen Ryan Renz and Aidan Wright were previously honored this season as WCHA Scholar-Athletes after achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Joining their WCHA Scholar-Athlete cohorts on the All-Academic list were senior captain Gus Correale; junior defensemen Kyle Chatham and James Roll; and forwards Diego Cuglietta, C.J. Hayes, Brendan McKay and Hults.

For Correale, this marks the third time he has achieved WCHA All-Academic status in his career at LSSU. Defiel, Chatham, Roll, Wright, and Renz are all two-time honorees on the All-Academic list.
