Women’s Basketball Moves to 2-1 on Season with Win over Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W. Va. – Lake Superior State University women's basketball moved to 2-1 on the season with a 78-48 road win over Ohio Valley University on Thursday night.  

With the victory, Lake Superior State (2-1) is off to its best start through three games since 2014-15 when the Lakers started the season 3-0. It is also the first time since 2014-15 that the Lakers have won consecutive games. 

The Lakers never trailed and took control of the game in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 23-13 lead over Ohio Valley (0-3). The score was at its closest with the Lakers leading 4-3 with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lakers extended their lead to 15-7 with 3:38 left in the period. The Fighting Scots made the next basket to pull within six points at 15-9, but Lake Superior State went on an 8-4 run to close out the quarter. Claire Radtke scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter as she made 4-of-5 shots, including 2-of-3 shots from three-point range. 

The Laker lead continued to grow in the second quarter as they outscored the Fighting Scots 21-14 to take a 15-point lead into the half with the score 44-27. In the quarter, Ohio Valley clawed back to within nine points of Lake Superior State with the score 35-26 with just over two minutes remaining in the half, but Morgan Villemure scored six of the Lakers' final nine points of the half as LSSU finished out the half on a 9-1 run. 

In the third quarter, the Fighting Scots, tried to get back in the game, but the Lakers held a 16-13 edge in points in the quarter to extend their lead to 60-40. The lead grew to as many as 21 points during the quarter with the score 51-30 after a Villemure layup with 6:09 remaining in the frame. Ohio Valley responded with a 7-2 run that made the score 53-38 with under two minutes remaining, but Lake Superior State responded with a 7-2 run of its own to close out the quarter. 

The Lakers pulled away in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Fighting Scots 18-8 over the final 10 minutes of the game to make the final score 78-48. Eight different Lakers scored during the fourth quarter as Ella Bontrager led the way with five points. The Lakers' largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter as they led by 31 points with the score 71-40 with five minutes remaining.

LSSU had a balanced attack as four players garnered double digits in points. Radtke led the way with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Villemure scored 14 points off the bench on 6-of-8 shooting, while Sadie DeWildt (3-of-8) and Abigail Ostman (4-of-6) each scored 10 points. 

Kyrin Baklund led Ohio Valley with 14 points.

The Lakers shot 49.1 percent as a team, while holding the Fighting Scots to 24.6 percent shooting.
